Title: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Ryan on February 17, 2008, 08:52:19 PM
Since there seems to be an abundance of people having problems with whatever programs, and making new threads. I thought it would be a good idea to centralize them here. So if your having problems with EF, any other game, or even just with your computer in general, post here. Maybe someone else has had the same problem and can help.

As I was reading over this, it hit me that my computer's restart button doesn't work. It's plugged into the motherboard, but yeah, nothing. I've tried troubleshooting this with people from RPG-X forums, no luck. All I know is it's a Gateway PC customized like a mofo, and the damn restart button don't work.

Can you restart through Windows still?

yeah, and i've set my power button to bring up the shutdown window to choose restart, shutdown, or that other non-important option. but it doesn't work good for if my computer crashes, or freezes and I can't do anything, i'm forced to hold down the power button until it shuts down, which ain't good for it.

I have no idea how to solve the problem without actually sitting down with your computer myself. Sorry. It might just be borked. But maybe someone else can help.

Is the button connection on the board the right way round? Sounds silly but it can make a difference.

as in take the end plugged into the mother board and plug it into the button, and plug the button end into the motherboard?

Poppycock! i've never heard anything like this...I'm calling shenanigans!

No I mean, a connection has a negative and positive, so try taking it off the board and doing a 180 with it then plugging it back in.

Is it possible for you to set the shutdown button to restart your computer? As this would determine whether it is a hardware or software problem which is one step closer to solving it.

Do you have the motherboard that came with the tower ?

I don't know, but it might just be that your setup does not support a restart button. Alot of times, big named companies(like Gateway) will make a universal tower case to which they can instal just about anything they want into it to make the customer happy. I got a case a while back that had several buttons on the front, none of which worked. My newest computer came with audio ports on the front, that don't work as my system configuration doesn't support it.

i had the same problem once...i needed to install a driver (fitting to my mainboard)

I actually have never heard of a driver requirement for a restart button. Mainly because the restart button is just a power interupt. It's installed to the mother board via a set of jumpers where main system config has to transmit through it to operate. In default position the signal flows freely, but pressed in it breaks the connection. At least, that's now mine works. I build my computers, so I know what every part in my computer does. The alternative is to instal a second jumper connection in the same place, this removes the reset button from being transmitted through.

I've tried moving the jumpers to a different peg on the mother board, and none of them worked, i've pulled the front off and checked to see if it was connected to the restart button, no problems there.

Actually it's a custom built computer. It's just a gateway motherboard. I suppose I could ask the person who use to own it, but I don't know how well that'll work as he is a major druggy. However I know that the headphone and mic, as well as the USB plug-ins in the front don't work either. Yet they are all plugged in as well... The only thing that works is the power button and the CD Drives....as well as the temperature gauge and lights.

You'll have to tell me how to do that one. Without spending any money that is.

I suppose it's possible, but then if something happened, i'd have to use the switch on the back to shut down my comp....and well that would be even worse for the computer. Though for a test to see if it's the restart button or whatever else, it might work...i'll have to test that out.

I have  a question as well , whenever I put my computer in standby a few minutes later it turns itself back on , it has been like that ever since I got it. I am not sure why though  :-\

what kind of computer, and did you hit a key, or the mouse button, or is it the computer on its own.

Okay.  To help you find out your mother board model #, you need to open your tower and get a flashlight so you can see good on the motherboard.  You should be able to find a weird number like "755-A2".  They also tend to be bigger letters then any other text on the board. That'll be the model number and most manufacturers have there own set of numbers for all their boards.

If you can't find it, try to hold the "Pause/Break" button on your keyboard when your computer starts up.  The display text will tell you the motherboard model number and bios version.  I'll only need the model #.  If your computer starts up with a Logo, then get into the bios.  All motherboards tend to have a different way of getting into the bios.  Usually "F1, F2, F12, ESC or Del"...I'd try "Del" (Delete) first.  Then try to find the start-up logo option and shut it off.

Once you can find the motherboard model number, it'll much easier to find you a manual.  The reason I want the manual, is because some manuals show the positive and negative feeds of each plug insert for any external parts, such as the front audio panel.  It'll help to know if the front panel is connected properly. (This includes the restart button, if it's plugged into the right feeds)

Try not to mess around with the Jumpers as this could damage the computer if you don't know what your doing.  The manual will explain what each jumper is for.

whenever I put my computer in standby a few minutes later it turns itself back on , it has been like that ever since I got it. I am not sure why though  :-\

I've had a computer do this, but only with Vista.  Once I had XP installed, then it worked fine.  I never did figure that one out, I just took the easy way out and re-installed XP on it. :D

The BIOS is the place should your front audio panel not work, in case it's simply turned off.  There is usually an option but computers tend to vary.  The onboard USB's can also be turned on and off in the BIOS.  Just the expansion ones though, the ones in the back of the computer have no option to turn on or off.

If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them as best as I can. :D

I think it is vista....if he his a key, or the mouse button...that would answer his problem

I don't have vista , and its done it several times so I don't hit a key I leave my computer right when it goes into standby. And my computer is a Compaq Presario.

I checked my motherboard and there are only 2 numbers, both of which don't work for the product key on the Gateway website.  But the numbers are as follows

4000783

ABRG247233036 AA A81583-302

They are two barcodes. Beyond that there are only the letters and numbers engraved onto the Motherboard it's self. So if that helps, then woohoo, if not then I dunno, maybe the number is on the back of the motherboard or something.

Those codes definately are not the motherboard codes Alex, they are most likely the code to two different onboard functions/drivers.

4000783

ABRG247233036 AA A81583-302

That number is from a "Gateway E4000 Motherboard"
http://nzr.mvnu.edu/facilities/items/gatewaytowere4000-2.4.htm (http://nzr.mvnu.edu/facilities/items/gatewaytowere4000-2.4.htm)

This is just a reference for pictures of the motherboard.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300195223186 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300195223186)

Is this what your computer looks like? The manual is there, I'm downloading it now.

I don't have vista , and its done it several times so I don't hit a key I leave my computer right when it goes into standby. And my computer is a Compaq Presario.

Edit:
Sometimes when in standby, activity on the Ethernet port can start the computer up.  I don't know of this for sure since I don't know how your computer is configured.   I've never had my computer on standby so I haven't done any research into what will trigger the start up.  It may be an option in the BIOS but, either you would have to look in the manual or we can figure out what your motherboard is and download am anual to see if it's on or off.

There is supposed to be a way to configure it to only start up when either pressing the power button again, or the keyboard.  Again, I've never used the stand-by option so I don't know for sure. :D

I have no idea about the PC it's self as i've already previously stated that it's a custom built. However that looks like the right motherboard. So hopefully whatever manual you have should help me sort out this mess.

You can download the manual in the first link I posted, it's on that page and the link is labelled "manual".  It's a pdf file and its about 25 mb.  Check it out, hopefully it'll help.

Hey guys, I have been wanting to play singleplayer, but when I load the game it crashes and gives me this error: Z_Free:freed pointer without ZONEID. I have done everything that activision has said, but nothing works. Please help me!
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Alexander Wendaltz on February 22, 2008, 10:07:18 PM
Question: Does it load to the main menu or does it crash when trying to start a new game?

*EDITED*

I went ahead and looked into it for you, It claims it is a corrupted install. Here is the results of what I found:

Quote
On launching multiplayer, I receive a "Z_Free: freed a pointer without ZONEID" error in the console.

This error is typically caused
by a corrupted installation. To correct this, do the following.

1) Uninstall the game either using Add/Remove Programs
in the Control Panel, or the uninstall shortcut in the
Programs menu.

2) Once this is done, delete the game folder (C:\Program
Files\Raven\Star Trek Voyager - Elite Force by default).

3) Reinstall the game.

4) If the problem persists, you may want to try a manual
installation.

# To manually install the game, follow the directions
below.

      1) Put the Star Trek Elite Force CD in the CD-ROM drive
while holding down the Shift key. Continue to hold the
Shift key until the CD-ROM light stops blinking.

      2) Double-click on the My Computer icon.

      3) Right-click on the CD-ROM drive and select Explore
from the menu that pops up.

      4) When the Explorer window comes up, open the Setup folder.

      5) Highlight the following files and folders by clicking
them while holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard:

      BaseEF

      Extras

      anet.inf

      binkw32.dll

      efgamex86.dll

      efuix86.dll

      FFC10.dll

      Getinfo.dll

      Readme.rtf

      register.exe

      stvoy.exe

      stvoy.icd

      stvoyHM.exe

      6) Once the files are highlighted, go to the Edit menu
at the top of the screen, select Copy.

      7) Now we want to make a folder on your hard drive to
put all these files in, so double click on the Program
Files folder located on your C: drive.

      8) Go to the File menu at the top of the window and select
New > Folder, then Type in a name for the Folder (ie:
      ST Elite Force).

      9) Double-click on the folder you just created and then
go to the Edit menu, and select Paste.

Ok, so I have a new problem. One day I was tinkering around online and what not, and I accidentally kicked the plug in and unplugged my computer, SOOO now my Firefox download window is always blank, and I can't save pictures from the web. I goto the save window, choose a location, hit save, and it just doesn't save....no matter what I do pictures won't save. Ideas other than reinstalling Firefox?

Nope. I would just recommend reinstalling Firefox as it takes like 5 minutes to do.

ok, so I have a developing problem. Recently, whenever I try to startup serenity b v2, Ross's new rel, ent-e, atlantis, and even pos-b , on my side, not connected to a server, they ALL consistenelty give a parse read past end of f***ing server message eror. What the heck is going on? they didnt used to do this.

I have a vista machine with 2 gigs of ram plus 256 megs on the graphics chip, comhunkmegs are set at 1 gig via the shortcut line, sv pure to zero the same way.

Running resolution 1024X768 on a 1280 by 1024 monitor, full widescreen doesnt work for me. GL extensions on, compressed textures on, simple geometry off, geometry and texture detail high, 32-bit, trilinear filters, antiosopteric filtering engaged.

anyone mind telling me whats going on?

Cv not Sv?
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems

When you run the game do /sv_pure in the console to see what it is running, if it is by chance running at 1 like the original RPG-X shortcut is programmed to do then it will have problems. RPG-X should never be run in pure mode but they missed that in the shortcut creation setup.

Its sv, I messed up in my first post lol
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Jonathan Kent on February 25, 2008, 11:45:38 PM
Im running sv_pure 0. have it set in my shortcut line.
so thats not it. :-\

What else causes that? and why in samheim aint there a way to make ef ingore the server message that no one cares about?

Does it have anything at all to do with maps I have installed, or the number of pk3s in my rpg-x folder? ???

Or is it a mis-set graphics setting?
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Ross on February 26, 2008, 12:02:50 AM
Some times it can be to do with the number of files you have, try removing map files you no longer use. Though I have to say I have the busiest BaseEF Folder I have ever seen and I have no problems what so ever. You may also want to make sure you have things like /rpg_scannablepanels set to 0 just incase.
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Jonathan Kent on February 26, 2008, 12:05:03 AM
I cleared out a crapload of pk3s, no effect. I pushed my com_hunkmegs as far as  im comfortable with, no effect. rpg_scannable panles is set to zero via my shortcut line. I cant help but think that Ive got some graphics setting wrong.  :-\ those can affect this cant they?
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Ross on February 26, 2008, 12:09:10 AM
Graphics settings don't cause it, so you don't need to keep worrying about that, also set your hunkmegs down, it annoys the hell out of me and many others that this rumor goes around about setting it to half your actual memory size that's BS. Set it to 128 (the game will never actually draw more than that so it's pointless limiting your computers access to the memory when it's not being used). Also, don't have things like scannablepanels in the shortcut line, their is no need for it there, it's set in game, once you set it, the game will configure it's config setup to store that info.
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Jonathan Kent on February 26, 2008, 12:10:16 AM
so then whats the glitch? :-\
Cassini screwed with a load of stuff, could another little known little used map I have be responsible?
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Ross on February 26, 2008, 12:17:54 AM
Not for that error, like I said, the only two things that have actually been proved to cause that error is "scannablepanels" and "sv_pure" other than that there isn't even a listing of the error.
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Jonathan Kent on February 26, 2008, 12:20:41 AM
odd. very odd.

It loads, the little helm control spinner graphics goes around, and like with all parse errors, it kinda.....
well it hangs right before it gives the error, whereas in a succesful connection it speeds up so fast it flickers. is this any kind of clue?

EDIT; I have checked my shadow compatibilty files directories for the baseef and rpg-x folders, no stray files.
I have moved all EF compatible maps to baseef, no efect, I removed the expansion pak3 pk3 that I got from beer garden, no effect so I put it back, removed elite tex, no effect, put it back.

what the he triple toothpicks is going on? especially since this is the opposite of 99% of problems. most people can run clientside fine and cant connect serverside.

I get this problem sometimes, I haven't figured it out myself. Does it happen every day or is this the first day it's done it? if so try a quick restart and see what happens. I know when I have problems with Parse I just leave the game and go back in, but it sounds like your problem is more severe than my own.

Alex, if you haven't edited your start up shortcut from sv_pure 1 to sv_pure 0 I would pretty much guarantee that is the source of your problems.

That reminds me Ross, you owe me 50 bucks, because that didn't help. :P
I have the same problem though, I run serverside fine and have problems clientside...ok, I have no idea what that means, lol, anyway, sometimes when I get a parse error, I load a map like the runabout and then do /callvote to change it to the map that was giving me the error, it doesn't always work, but it does sometimes.

Well i'm afraid I have yet another problem. I went to add the slipstream to BC, and I wasn't sure how to go about it, so I looked around in the BC Mod Packager and when I went to the menu tab, it came up with an error for every ship, station, and just about everything else, so all I have left on the ship selection menu is a handful of federation ships, and McKinley station. WTF happened and how do i fix it?!

*note* how to install the slipstream mod would be a plus too.

He he he, ya...that'll happen.

You don't need the BCMP to install slipstream.  Once you have the Slipstream Framework installed, to add slipstream to a ship...you have to use the MPE (Model Property Editor) in the SDK to install a Slipstream Drive into the ships HP (Hard Point).  Or you can do it by opening up the .py file in the Hardpoints folder and editing the ship manually, but I would prefer the MPE. :D

Because BC runs in "-TestMode" and that it's really modded now, the BCMP tends not to understand how the ships are configured and will take each ship that are more new, off the list.  It's more of an error with BCMP then BC.  You're going to have to re-add all the ships you have installed into your QB Menu through the BCMP.  I don't reccomend going back into the "Menus" again, because it'll take off all your ships again.

Going to "Game Tools" and then to "Ship Plugins" is fine though, here you can add all your ships to the game.  You choose your ship and choose a "Species", then click on "Make Plugin".  That'll add your ship back into the game.

To help prevent this, I would reccomend the new BCSMC 5.0 by USS Sovereign.

Using the BCMP to get your ships back ingame would be faster, but in the future...I reccomend BCSMC.  It's better and doesn't really have any errors anymore so it's all good there.  It may take a while to get your ships back ingame, so hopefully you'll have enough patience. :D  Take your time.

P.S.
I'm just trying out BCSMC v5.0 now, there is a "BCMP Fixer" on the top left.  Click that little icon on the top left that says "Mode: BCSMC"...you'll get a dropdown menu and click on "BCMP Fixer".  I think that is supposed to fix the "Menus" error that the BCMP makes.  Try it out, I don't have those errors on my comp so you can give it a try. :D

Well I was hoping there was an easier way to install the ships....but I guess one by one is the only way....how upsetting this is....*sigh* well thanks for the BCSMC link, i'll use that in the future.

Oh yeah I had actually forgotten about that lol, that's why I only added it to the ships I actually use on a regular basis.

so how exactly do you go about adding the slipstream? like I need step by step instructions.

There are actually instructions in the folder for the slipstream files as I recall and it's really good as it gives you step by step with screenshots of the windows and things.

Ok, back to firefox, I actually uninstalled and reinstalled it, and still exactly the same, only now it resets my computer 90% of the time I open it up. WTF do I do?!

Firefox is fixed, to hell with that problem. I need to get back to BC. I tried adding the ships back to the list, but I don't know how. I can add the custom ships i've d/led, but all the ships that come with the KM mod....i've tried re adding all the files, they don't show up on the BCMP list, so I have no idea how to re-add them. Episode 5 will never be made at this rate....what do i do?!
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Ross on March 10, 2008, 06:09:48 PM
KM Ships are automatically installed when you install the MOD.

Yeah, well remember the problem I had posted a few pages back, where I made them go away by using BCMP? well yeah, turns out all I had to do was re add the ship files, then turn the mutators back on and such, so yeah, it's all fixed, Thanks Cordanilus AGAIN. I goto Coranilus for all my BC fixing needs! *cheesy commercial style smile*  ;D

Could have told you that too if I had known that is what you meant lol  :P
Title: Re: Post Here if Having Technical Problems
Post by: Alexander Wendaltz on March 10, 2008, 06:59:32 PM
I believe it was either you or Ryan who said go back into BCMP and re add them to the list and never goto the Menu, and that only works for the custom ships. So yeah, i knew I had to re add them, just didn't know how. Hell I re-added the whole KM mod, and Cordanilus told me to check the mutators, maybe that was why they weren't working, and sure enough that was the problem :P

I asked you if your mutators were on and you said yes  grrr

OK back on topic...

Ive noticed on some maps that entities react differently when Im SP than when MP on server.
Doors that are opened with a button bug so that after the first time they reclose whenever you hit the button, even if theyre still closed.
Also transporters activated by an entity dont work on some maps.

But I get none of this Targ manure on server.

What gives?

That sounds like the bug from the 2.1 Final Candidate. The actual 2.1 release version was supposed to have fixed that. Check to make sure you don't have any hidden copies of pak4_finalcandidate or whatever it was called.

actually I discovered that in my zeal to dl I got an incorrect version of the 2.1 that was 88 Megs instead of the proper one.
re-dling fixed it.

Ah yeah, that's the first version that was released with the Atlantis files in it lol. At least we know what to tell people now if they have this problem in future.

It seems the server... disappeared this morning. I lost the connection in the middle of an RP and so far I haven't been able to reconnect to the Holo-Fed server.

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? Should I try "search for server"?

(I apologize if this has been posted before.)

Yeah, it really would be nice to know when the server is down, yet we never know until everyone is about to goto bed. I guess I'll have to try harder to make random stops on the server.

Glad you got it working, just so you know for future reference, this can happen sometimes, it's to do with the connection lines used on the massive journey from your pc through your provider, out to the EF master server, then to the game server and back again. If there is a fault in one of those lines, then you may not be able to see things, yet others may still be able to get in without any problems.

Hence what your doing by repeatedly pushing the buttons is known as precussive therapy. IE hit/jiggle it until it works  :D

Ok, my computer has a SERIOUS problem, I thought it was freezing before, but some how I managed to be patient long enough for it to un-freeze. Turns out it does this EVERY TIME, like it's stopping to think or something. I thought it was Firefox, turns out it's my computer. I used the Registry cleaner and that hasn't helped, removed 3 trojans, no help, disk check doesn't work, defrag didn't help, i'm out of options, HELP!!!!
