Title: Anti Proxy
Post by: Ross on February 16, 2010, 10:43:52 AM
We've installed some anti proxy software to help prevent people accessing the forums via a proxy, we'll be monitoring to make sure no errors pop up but if any of you notice a problem or have difficulty accessing all areas of the forums please let us know. :)

just curious why have you actully installed these? they aren't not much of a threat to us, and there are other reasons why people use proxy sites..

Proxy sites are used by spambots to allow the same crawler to register on a board multiple times and post various advertisments that lead to dodgy content. In addition to this, several people whom have been previously banned from these forums have tried to use proxies to circumvent their bans. This prevents both of those.

Well you can still use a proxy. You just don't use a well known or advertised one.

I'm confused about your first question, Do you mean how would they know if they are being blocked by accessing through a proxy? If its that then I asume a warning would come up.

I do agree though a lot of people use there Iphones etc to look on forums etc, On my pagan central about 30% of my members access the site through there black barry. Also I can no longer access this site at the local library because of there settings.

I think he was actually referring to Huskers comment about less 'well known' proxies.

We've made some modifications to the setup which should prevent problems for registered members but will continue to effect members attempting to register from proxies.

We feel this will provide the best solution since it will prevent spam bots from attempting to register and prevent banned members from attempting to register new accounts via proxies to circumvent the bans on their accounts but wont cause problems for the other members of the community.
